I'm thinking about getting a trainer for the winter months.

What do people have, what do you like / dislike about it, and what would you recommend?

Also does it matter much other than tire tread whether I use a mountain bike or road bike with it?

I have a Peformance fluid trainer and have been happy with it, had it at the Challenge to warm up. I use it once a week during the winter, the rest is done on a spin bike at work. So for light use I am comfortable recommending it, for heavier use you may want to consider one of the brand name units. I have no experience with magnetic or whatever else is available.

I prefer using the road bike. Better gear selection, you can be upright, in the drops or aero, and it is what the Spinerval dvd's are based on. Although I did use an old mountain bike with a slick for a few years.

Also recommend a sweat guard for the bike and a fan for you. And Spinervals, heart rate monitor and bike computor to keep yourself entertained.

It does, but I rarely touch it. I used to use it more with the mountain bike, but the road bikes taller gearing is usually adaquate for high resistance training. I think mine has 4 or five settings and I leave it on 2 all the time.
