Determine VO2max From Running Race Time

Article Date: January 14, 2009
By: Ryan O'Brien

Looking for a way to calculate your VO2max based on a recent running time, you have come to the right place!

I have combed the internet looking for information on this very subject and have discovered the following formula by Daniels & Gilbert:

Calculate VO2max from Running Time:
  • VO2 Max=(-4.60 + 0.182258 * velocity + 0.000104 * velocity^2)/(0.8 + 0.1894393 * e^(-0.012778 * time) + 0.2989558 * e^(-0.1932605 * time))

Knowing your VO2max is helpful when using a variety of calculators to measure fitness level.

Estimated VO2max:

Distance Units* meters
km
miles
Running Distance* distance
Running Duration* Hours
Minutes
Seconds
