It looks like tonight will not work out...... I will give a one month extension from tonight to complete these stages. We can shoot for next week as a group, but if your up there, time it. You never know. Downhill will probably be fine, the uphill at this point will be a run.

I will probably shoot for a 5pm road ride tonight if weather is cooperating, leaving from NHS.

Is the stage race date for Oak st. and Loverin Hill correct being on the same night?

I need a ruling from the Commish.

I road the downhill recently - 8:11. After doing it once, though, I have serious reservations about doing it again for time. First, it wasn't a sweet ride down flowing singletrack like Eastside, Snake Alley, etc. It was a death-defying rip that scared the b'jesus out of me (y'all know how chicken I am...). Instead of "Wow, that was awesome", it was more like, "Wow, I can't believe I didn't crash."

Furthermore, both front and rear wheels got tweaked a little bit, as did my rear brake rotor. Webb's is coming...

I was considering just not showing up for the official night, riding the uphill sometime later and posting my times. But I'm looking forward to chasing/being chased up Coit.

So, will the Commish allow me to post my previous time, even though I attend Wedneday evening? I'll still ride downhill, just not at "ludicrous speed."

Cheers,

MG

post your time....... no problem. and enjoy your descent tonight, and pick up any carnage left behind.

I can't believe it took that little. Good ride.

5:30 easy ride out to the climb. Meet and Park on the North end of the Track. I will bring my wallet in case of post ride festivities.

$25 dollar gift cert to be given to fastest downhill tonight.

crap, I forgot.. we will leave very late and go slow to the base of the climb (yellow box) probably taking a longer route. We will head up probably upper loop and check out Big rock, then up and over the Pinnacle to eastside, eastside to bear trap, then start at the yellow box. By then we will have hopefully connected. If you are not already with us, we will wait at the yellow box. What time do you expect to arrive in Newport?

How did it go tonight? Hope all is well.

I managed to get out of my funk this afternoon and do an easy ride around the Pinnacle with Joan & Al. I sent them down Salem's lot and I hit the new middle section of Brake Burner. Some how new trails always seem to be tougher in my mind then they are in reality but I guess that is good for most. Maybe not as hard as I was envisioning but still a lot of fun. I wouldn't ride it wet though, that would be a mistake.

So did I get first tracks or did someone beat me to it?

We went up there and checked it out, but decided not to give it a first run test on Stage night.

Climbs were great..........wait until you hear Greg's climbing time..

The downhill was mostly about the summer street climb. Although launching off the rock on summer street downhill was pretty fun.

Post ride wings, beers, and helicopters finished the night.

missed ya.

both the up and the down dried quite nicely and was pretty smooth

the path was a little narrow between the thorns and ferns on Cuttings

I noticed the huge tree had disappeared from the path

Overall it looks good up there.

The new Brake Burner middle section is not fast, but it is short. It's very ridable. The ledge at the bottom was the easy part, the upper half is steep and technical. I didn't ride the bottom section, not sure why but took Joan & Al the other way down the switchbacks and out to Summer St.

The trails were sweet yesterday. Looks like they dried up just in time for more rain.

Hopefully in the next week I will recover and be able to give some of these trail stages a good run before GG.

Can't say I'm surprised by Greg's climb time, but it's still crazy fast. Looks like he has the time to beat on the downhill too. I too am surprised you can descend from Coit to the HS that fast considering his time is almost as fast as the Pinnacle Downhill times and Pinnacle is a lot closer.

How did people descend?

Is there anyone else who hasn't done the Coit climb yet who'd like to get out sometime next week and give it a go? (My bike isn't very healthy right now so I need to give it some TLC before I get out and hammer on it.)

PS: In case you were wondering... running is faster than biking up Coit. I ran it yesterday in 14:50... I should have gone faster but was quite dehydrated.

[quote:fba920d05f]running is faster than biking up Coit[/quote:fba920d05f]

This comes as no surprise to me.

Yeah, my bike has seen better days as well. Last night I think I finally solved the leaky rear shock issue I've been having since I had it rebuilt. Not sure why I didn't do this sooner but I pulled it off the bike and tore it appart. What do you suppose I found inside? Absolutely no grease or oil of any kind. I greased the .... out of it, reassembled it with the help of a clamp, the negative spring is a challenge to get back together without the use of a clamp, put it back on the bike and took it for a test hop around the yard. After about five minutes I popped the front seal, apparently you have to screw the boddy fully back on, WHO KNEW? Back inside to see what damage I did. Loosed the body a bit and the seal popped right back in and didnt look damaged. A little more grease and tightened the body all the way up this time until the body meets the front plate of the shock, now the o ring seal is not showing any more. I probably should have paid closer attention when taking appart, could have avoided this mishap. Reassemble and back out for another bouncy test. After 5 minutes everything appears solid. A quick check of the air pressure and she seems to be holding air now. Go figure a little grease and the shock is holding air. Needs a good ride to be sure but I think I got the leak fixed. Maybe now I can actually get my bike tuned to my liking for the first time in a long time.

To answer your question Adam, if my recovery goes well I could be looking to give it a go late next week. Depends on how my body responds to some easy exercise.

I didn't race Coit up or down even though I tagged along to watch the fun, so I'll be trying it probably next Saturday or whenever there is a dry day. We have the Oak St crit and Loverin Hill climb this coming weds and I'm racing HHH in Sunapee on Sunday.

For the ride up Coit, my watch didn't reset. I went down as a sweep after the last person on Vance's Back Lash in a conventional time of 9:36.

A couple riders went down Brake Burner while the majority took Vance's.

I'm going to do all of Break Burner on my official ride down.

I'm curious after people hit Summer where they went from there?

I will be taking Brake Burner including the new part all the way to Summer. After that I plan to do a test to see which way is faster either: Summer -> Upper Loop -> Forest or Summer -> North Boundary -> North -> Ridge -> Lower Loop.

Originaly I was thinking North Boundary route would be faster but after giving it some serious thought and looking at the map, this route has a long flat run out at the end and a flat in the middle which might hurt me. Now I'm curious if a more consistantly downhill route all the way would be faster also considering transitioning to other trails especially North Boundary will kill a little time.

A smooth big rock ride with your bypass is pretty slick then on to Upper loop. JB was following me and he did the other route and I happend to pick up a bit of time on him, whilst having messy run and hitting some trees. A clean run would have given me 5 seconds.

Brake Burner appeared to be faster on the night and taking it all the way down would be the fastest if you know the trail well (you built it, you should take it.)

The 2 minute climb up summer street is the most important. If you can do it in 1:45......all the better. From the junction to the Pinnacle it is probably 3:30 to the tar ( i did a 3:39 on my test run)

I have concidered Big Rock as an option but I can't see how it could be faster if you have the brass for FULL speed down Summer. I used to RIP Summer back when it was a little smoother, and before a few serious crashes. It took seconds to get to the Water Towers staying straight. Not sure I have the brass for that kind of speed these days.

If I can finally get my bike operating within exceptible parameters perhaps the loss of brain cells from that last brain bash will allow a respectible run.
